Answer
How do I measure a doorway’s clear width?
Open the door to 90° and measure from the face of the open door to the stop on the latch side (2010 ADA Standards, 404.2.3). That’s the width a wheelchair actually gets; the minimum is 32 in.
Open the doorway width calculator
Step by step
- Open the door square to the wall, at 90°.
- Find the stop: the strip on the frame the door closes against.
- Measure across from the door’s face to that stop, at the narrowest point.
- Also measure stop to stop: that’s the clear width with offset hinges or no door.
Compare with your chair or walker
Measure its widest point, such as the hand rims, and leave room for hands either side.
