Answer

What size toilet seat riser do I need?

Target height minus the seat height you have now, measured floor to top of seat. A standard toilet at about 15 in needs 2–4 in to reach the ADA range of 17–19 in, or 3 in to reach 18 in.

Measure from the floor to the top of the seat. The ADA range is 17–19 in (604.4); a standard toilet is about 15 in (Mr. Rooter), so a riser of 2–4 in brings it into range.

A personal target

Measure a chair the person stands up from easily, floor to top of seat, and use that as the target. Higher isn’t always better: feet should still rest flat on the floor.

More questions

Do risers come in set heights?

Yes: most are sold in a few fixed heights. Pick the one that lands closest to your target without going over the top of your range.

Riser or new toilet?

A riser is removable and cheap; a comfort-height toilet is a plumbing job. Both can reach 17–19 in.
